2016년 여름, 자신의 고향 제주 곶자왈을 카메라에 담은 《The Forest》를 발표했던 사진가 김미경이 3년여 만에 《The Forest_비밀의 문을 열다》를 선보인다. 제주 바다를 촬영한 ‘바당, 결’ 작업(2010)을 시작으로, ‘남해안’ 시리즈(2013-2014)와 ‘숲-제주 곶자왈’(2014-2016) 작품들을 통해 지속적으로 ‘자연의 숭고함’을 이야기해온 작가 김미경이 이번 전시에서 보여주고자 하는 비밀스러운 풍경은 과연 어떤 모습일까?
《The Forest_비밀의 문을 열다》라는 전시 타이틀에서 짐작해 볼 수 있듯이, 이번에도 그의 카메라 속 대상은 ‘숲’이다. 하지만 그 풍경은 우리 눈 앞에 쉽사리 펼쳐지는 일반적인 푸른 숲의 모습이 아니다. 추운 겨울, 숲 속에서 나지막이 붉은 색으로 피어나는 숭고한 동백꽃들, 눈이 펑펑 쏟아지는 겨울 숲 속에서 경건하게 숨죽이고 있는 새들, 4계절에 걸친 설악산 토왕성 폭포의 새벽녘과 낮과 밤의 풍광들, 그리고 밝은 도시 불빛 속에서는 좀처럼 보기 힘든 깊은 산 속 맑은 별들의 이야기들. 이러한 풍경들은 2014년부터 작가가 5년에 걸쳐, 편집증에 가까울 정도로 무수히 산을 오르내리며 낮과 밤을 가리지 않고, 추위와 고독, 그리고 어둠의 공포와 싸워가며 카메라에 담아낸 결과물이다.
그렇다면 김미경은 왜 이토록 끊임없이 ‘자연’을 탐미해가며, 이를 대상으로 고된 작업을 해오고 있는가? 작가는 이야기한다. 고향인 제주도의 풍요로운 자연이 작업의 출발점이라고. 유년기 기억 속 유채꽃 가득한 노란빛의 봄도, 눈이 부실 정도로 빛나는 초록색 여름 세상도, 상상할 수 없을 정도로 다양한 색들로 가득한 가을날도, 하얀 눈 속을 뚫고 피어나는 붉은 동백들의 몽환적인 겨울 경치도, 모두 자신의 작품의 근원이라고. 그리고 거대하지는 않지만, 자신에게 위안처가 되어주는 소소한 자연의 풍경들을 대중들과 공유하고 싶다고.
김미경이 이전의 ‘숲-제주 곶자왈’에서 숲이라는 공간의 표면적인 모습을 펼쳐서 보여주었다면, 이번 《The Forest_비밀의 문을 열다》에서는 숲이라는 공간 속에 은밀하게 숨어있는, 그 이면의 다양한 모습들로 관객들을 초대한다. 극도의 추위와 어둠의 공포를 견뎌가면서도 작업 내내 행복했다는 작가 김미경을 보니, 그녀가 가장 좋아한다는 알퐁스 도데의 단편 소설 《별》에 나오는 문구가 떠오른다.
“만약에 당신이 별들이 아름답게 빛나는 밤을 지새운 적이 있다면 우리가 잠을 자야 하는 것으로 아는 그 시간에, 신비로운 또 다른 세계가 고독과 고요 속에서 깨어나는 것을 아실 겁니다.”
자, 그럼 이제 우리도 비밀의 문을 조심스레 열고 들어가 ‘숲의 작가’ 김미경이 바라본 세계를 들여다 보자.

Photographer Mikyung Kim returns to Art Space J with her new collection of works titled The Forest_Opening the Secret Door, three years after her last collection The Forest. From her early works containing the images of her hometown, Jeju, she has been continuing to explore the sublimity of the nature in her works Southern Sea (2013-2014) and The Forest_Jeju Gotjawal , (2014-2016) series. What secrets will she reveal in The Forest_Opening the Secret Door?
As the title implies The Forest_Opening the Secret Door, the main subject of the collection is the forest. However, it is hardly the greens we encounter in our routine life. Actually, these are noble camellias blooming into red and pink in the remote mountains of midwinter, birds on a branch hardly breathing in heavy snow, diverse views of Towangseong Falls of Seorak Mountain from the break of day to the middle of the night in four seasons, and mysterious stories of bright stars in the sky which we rarely see amidst the neon lights of city. All of these images are the hard-earned results of Kim enduring bitter cold, loneliness, and even extreme fear of darkness in the forest.
What drives Kim, despite its physical demand, to keep working with nature persistently? She says that various landscapes of Jeju Island, her hometown, is the starting point of every piece of her works. According to the artist, all of these are the origin of Kim’s own works: the spring days full of rape blossoms in her memory of childhood, dazzling sunny green of the summer, the incredibly colorful autumn scenes, and the dreamlike winter landscape where red camellias bloom in the snow. Through her works, Kim wishes to share the scenery of the nature (which is also her refuge) with the audience.
If the focus of Kim’s last exhibition was capturing the spacial forest and showing it on dimensional surface, The Forest_Opening the Secret Door, she draws us in to see the diverse spectacles in the mystical world of forest. The following passage from Alphonse Daudet’s famous novel The Stars (Les étoiles), is a favorite of Kim, who reports being only happy throughout the work process despite the extreme coldness and darkness: “If you have ever passed the night under the stars, you know that a mysterious world awakes in its solitude and silence.”
