2006 세계보도사진전 서울개최
- 8월3일 ~ 9월4일 세종문화회관 미술관 신관에서
- 50여 년의 역사, 세계 최고 권위의 보도사진전
순간의 선택, 영원한 기록. 그리고 인간에 대한 애정. 사진기자들은 보도사진을 이렇게 표현한다. 전세계 사진기자들과 보도 사진 계 최대의 축제이자 40개국 85개 도시에서 순회 전시 중인 ‘2006 세계보도사진전(World Press Photo)’의 서울 전시회가 8월3일부터 9월4일까지 세종문화회관 미술관 신관에서 열린다.
50여 년의 역사로 사진기자들에게 ‘꿈의 무대’로 통하는 최고 권위의 ‘세계보도사진전’이 국내에서 전시회를 여는 것은 이번이 제3회이다. 올해는 122개국에서 4,448명의 사진기자 및 사진작가들이 83,044장의사진을 출품했으며, 1월28일부터 2월9일까지 암스테르담에서 100% 디지털로 심사가 이루어졌고, 엄선된 인간애 넘치는 200여 점의 사진이 전시된다.
제49회 세계보도사진전의 심사위원들은 로이터(Reuter) 소속의 캐나다 사진기자 핀바 오레일리 (Finbarr O’Reilly)의 사진을 2006 세계보도사진전 대상작품으로 선정했다.
비상급식소에서 한 살배기 남자아기의 야윈 손가락이 엄마의 입술을 누르고 있는 장면을 포착한 이 사진은 수십 년에 걸친 최악의 가뭄과 엄청난 규모의 메뚜기 떼의 습격으로 수백만 명이 기아선상에서 허덕이는 니제르(Niger) 서북부 타우아주(Tahoua)에서 2005년 8월1일 촬영됐다. 세계보도사진전 심사위원장인 제임스 콜튼(James Colton)은 수상작에 대해 다음과 같이 평가했다. “나는 2주전 이 작품을 처음 본 뒤로 단 한 순간도 잊을 수가 없었다. 심지어 심사대상에 오른 수천 장의 다른 작품을 보고 난 뒤에도 이 사진은 내 머릿속에서 계속 맴돌았다. 이 사진은 모든 것을 다 갖추고 있다. 아름다움, 공포, 그리고 절망. 이 사진은 단순하면서 우아하며, 또한 사람의 마음을 움직이게 한다.”
이 전시회를 주관하는 세계보도사진재단은 네덜란드 왕실의 후원으로 1955년 ‘대중들의 보도사진 관심 증진’을 목표로 비영리재단으로 설립됐다. 이 재단은 사진전뿐 아니라 사진기자들을 대상으로 세미나와 토론회를 열고 ‘마스터클래스’ 등 교육기관을 운영해 새로운 형태의 보도사진을 연구하는 등 사실상 전세계의 포토저널리즘을 주도하는 단체다.
심사위원들은 10개 주제로 나누어 25개국의 사진기자 및 사진작가 63명의 작품을 수상작으로 선정했다.
수상국은 아르헨티나, 호주, 방글라데시, 캐나다, 칠레, 콜롬비아, 체코, 덴마크, 프랑스, 그리스, 헝가리, 인도, 아일랜드, 이스라엘, 이탈리아, 레바논, 네덜란드, 노르웨이, 중국, 폴란드, 러시아, 남아프리카공화국, 스페인, 영국, 미국이다.
2006 세계보도사진 대상수상작가인 핀바 오레일리는 2006년 4월23일 암스테르담 오우데 케르크(구 교회)에서 벌어질 시상식에서 상과 함께 1만유로의 상금과 캐논(Cannon)에서 제공한 EOS 1D Mark II n 카메라를 부상으로 받게 된다.
세계보도사진전은 독일우편복권이 후원하며 캐논(Cannon)과 TNT가 전세계 전시를 후원한다.

The fingers of malnourished one-year-old Alassa Galisou are pressed against the lips of his mother Fatou Ousseini at an emergency feeding center in the town of Tahoua in northwestern Niger, on August 1. One of the worst droughts in recent times together with a particularly heavy plague of locusts had destroyed the previous year’s harvest, leaving millions of people severely short of food. Heavy rains promised well for the 2005 crops, but hindered aid workers bringing supplies. Relief had been slow to come. Accusations were leveled variously blaming the United Nations, Western governments, the international aid community and officials in Niger itself for failing to respond early enough to an imminent crisis. Just weeks before the photo was taken leaders at the G8 summit of the world’s richest nations had resolved to make poverty history by doubling aid to Africa by 2010.

UN, 서방 국가들, 국제구호단체, 그리고 니제르의 정부는 이런 절박한 식량위기에 신속히 대응하지 않아 피해를 키웠다는 거센 비난을 감수해야 했다. 이 사진의 촬영이 이루어지기 바로 몇 주전에서야 세계에서 가장 부유한 국가들인 G8의 정상회담에서 아프리카 빈곤 퇴치를 위해 2010년까지 원조를 두 배로 늘리기로 한 합의가 이루어졌다.

Since the start of the Iraq War, Marines based at Buckley Air Force base in Colorado, USA, have honored the memory of 16 fallen comrades, and had the difficult duty of helping the families to bear their loss. Second Lieutenant James Jeffrey Cathey was one of the fallen returned from Iraq for burial.

A bull attacks a horse during a ‘corrida’ at La Macarena bullring in the city of Medellin in western Colombia. Picadors mounted on horses play a role early on in a bullfight stabbing the bull with lances to weaken it through loss of blood before its final confrontation with the torero. The bull weighed around 500 kilograms. The horse received a blow to one of its legs, but was not gored and was taken from the ring.
콜롬비아 서부 메델린시의 라 마카레나 투우 경기장에서 벌어진 투우 경기에서 황소가 말을 공격하고 있다. 말 위에 탄 투우사가 성난 황소에게 창들을 꽂아 피를 흘리게 함으로써 약하게 만들면 그 뒤 땅 위의 다른 투우사가 마지막으로 황소와 대결을 벌인다. 이 말은 500kg에 이르는 이 황소에게 다리 한쪽을 받혔지만 다행히 뿔에 꿰뚫리지는 않았고, 경기장 밖으로 옮겨졌다.

Five thousand “kong ming” lamps are released into the sky at Bang Niang Beach, in Khao Lak, Thailand in a commemoration ceremony one year after the December 2004 Tsunami. The lamp symbolized people killed in Thailand in the disaster.
2004년 쓰나미 참사를 애도하기 위해 1년후 태국의 카오락지방의 방니앙 해변에서 5000개의 “콩밍” 등을 하늘로 올려 보내고 있다.
이 등들은 참사에 희생된 사람을 의미하고 있다.
