Profile of Korean Photography Today
Seung Kon Kim
(photo critic)
The Whitney Biennial held recently al the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the exhibition of " Young German Art of th '90s" held recently at the Sonje Muesum of Contemporary Art have offered domestic viewers an opportunity to experience the rapid change of the art environment. The two exhibitions with their great number of photographs have shown Korean art circles how much weight photography is being given internationally.
"The Horizon of Korean Contemporary Art" exhibition, which has been held three times since 1991 with more than 200 domestic and foreign participants, and the exhibition "50 Years of Korean Photography, 1945-1994",which was held at the Seoul Arts Center in 1993 with the participant of about 100 of Korea's noted photographers, have evoked a strong response from Korea's photograph circles, which do not have even a single photo museum or photo institute.
The 100-year history of Korea since photography was introduced in the middle of the 1880s has been one of constant upheavals and trials. Passing along such a long and thorny path, Korean photography has cultivated some original characteristics. The turmoil of the contemporary history of Korea might have fostered in Korean photographers an eccentric insight into reality, and made them turn their back on grim reality. That is the reason why Korea's most representative photographers are largely divided into two opposite camps, one of professionals with great interest in social reality and another obstinately clinging to amateurism.
In a real sense, the photo history of Korea came to a turning point at the end of the 1960s, when some of the photographers participating in this exhibition began their work. Along with these participants in a vital stage of Korean photography, there are photographers in their 40s, the following generation, in this exhibition. Even though each photographer chose his own distinctive subjects and techniques, they are all prominent in the history of Korean photography started to attain maturity here. Whether their work resulted from rebellion or succession, it exerted far-reaching influence of following generation.
Woon Gu Kang works in a rather unnoticeable way, but nobody is as vigorous as he is in the editorial field. He is one of the few who have had a great influence on young photographers who choose photography as a true profession, not as a luxurious hobby as a true procession, not as a luxurious hobby and not as a stepping-stone to genuine art. He does not try attract attention but he is always in the spotlight.
He is not just photographing a normal landscape, but the breath and the heartbeat of Korean. When he takes photography of a farmer, he is focusing on the Korean mind. Some of his photographs are critical of reality, but mostly they are restrained to the nothing degree, avoiding radical and hostile sentiments.
Even if he presents some realistic facts, we first of all read the photographer's warm sympathy and humanity toward the subject. We should not fail to notice that more than half of his recent photos are of cosmestic animals and children. Anyone who has read his writings knows that his view of Korea was not molded in a short period of time.
Bohn Chang Koo is one of the successful photographers who have elevated photography to the status of a field of art. He has made himself a noted photographer in the relatively short time of ten years. His photographs are mostly deformed from their original form. He cuts chips of wood, other photographs, and pieces of acrylic plate and pastes them on the print, or scratches the emulsion of the print and burn it, so nobody can realize from the final photograph what the original form was. In fact, such experimental works have not gained acceptance with either photographers or viewers in Korea, who have an entrenched line of thought that photographs must visually represent the subject in the most realistic way.
His works seem to be deeply related with death and the passage of time, he tries to show his willingness to bestow immorality upon his subjects in unique ways, for instance by putting fallen leaves or a stopped watch on sensitized paper and then partially burning the developed photograph. He started his photography in Germany, and he was known abroad earlier than in Korea. Form the way in which he continuously pursues new viewpoints and technical variations, or reconstructs materials in heterogeneous arrangements after extracting them from their nature, it seems that he was exposed to German subjectivism.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of photography is that it is still the most perfect method of recording the external world. Even though we accept freedom of choice in artistic activity, the fact is not be shaken that photography is still a record of physical reality. But Dae Soo Kim shifts his subjects from non-fiction to fiction and from the external to the internal. In view of this he might be classified as an internal documentary photographer.
His photos show unclear figures like embryos of infants, or like silkworm moths or cocoons. They give us the same feeling we get ancient cave painting of animals or from fossilized Paleozoic insects. It is needless to say that his subjects symbolize the eternal self-renewal of life. He wants trace back to the origin of time and of the universe.
Through the methods of scratching prints, of etching, and of compounding heterogeneous materials, he also is carrying on a tenacious inquiry into the internal reality which is related with the essential mechanism of life and with the spiritual world.
His performance in photography extends the range of recording. He is presenting hi work in the form of installation art in order to give viewers the experience of the materialized photograph itself, not just a plane photograph. It is proof that a photograph can exist as an object.
In Jang Sup Kim's works, the ideas and the plans embodied in the process of creating them are more significant than what has been photographed. His photos with double exposure and slightly misaligned frame lines make us dizzy as if the crust of the earth has been buckled by some irresistible force, then induces in us a fear of destructive circumstance to come. His apocalyptic color exaggerated by an organge filter raises such an effect to an even higher pitch.
Border on a map, or lines of latitude or longitude, do not actually exist on the globe. They are only conceptual lines. Despite this, all phenomena of the world are ruled by conceptual principles. His thought centers around the belief that eternal permanence does not exist. Perhaps it might be the same feeling we have when our firm belief in something we think we know well collapses. The zero gravity zone in the chasm caused by the bucking of the earth grows bigger, and there might appear a new horizon which we have never seen before.
From the sea, rocks, and pine trees of Bien U Bae, we realize that he understands the use of darkness better than anyone else, we feel an unbearable weight in his works. One might guess that it is because of the mass of the particles of silver in the unbleached state remaining on the printing paper.
His photographs are rather taciturn, compressing time and spirit into high density, and are sharply cut off from the time and space of reality. I have seen him waste an unbelievable amount of printing paper until be got not print that satisfied him. The beautiful photographs resulting from such effort give us a delicate tactile feeling of Korean scenery.
Instead of just recording scenery, he puts himself into scenery. So we feel that even artificial structures in his photographs seem to be transformed into natural objects.
Unlike his previous photographs, which showed a lyrical world, his powerful dolmen photographs, which were sent to the "Daedong Sansoo" exhibition, strongly emphasize existence of the subject as material.
Looking at her violent and energetic works, it is hard to believe Jung Jin Lee is a woman photographer. Making visual pent up and perverted Freudian fantasies of modern man, her photos ravage the viewer's mind and raise a king of fear of the human propensity for vandalism. The impression given by her late 'desert series,' roughly exposed on a sensitive emulsion coated on rice paper is of strong sexual images. They reflect AIDS, drugs, perversion, racism, and violence, problems of the America she lives.
From her photos in this exhibition, pressing natural forms in the barren desert which reject any empathy and dissected body parts-perhaps her own-among ruins, one might read her frustrated writing as a process of dissecting and reconstructing her identity as a woman and an alien.
Myung Duck Joo's photographs are excessively dark and abstruse. Not many people can make them out. This will be even trust of people who want to see something clearly depicted. He removes perspective and specific shape from his photos. From one of his works which seems to be a landscape, one can merely guess that is a dimly-lighted landscape, one that appears not to be particularly attractiveness. But if the viewer is a Korean, this work might evoke the smell of earth from the earthen wall which appeared blurredly in the light from the pale rice-paper window. His photos are not rational but rather are full of uncertainty and obscurity. They are obviously very Oriental. He handles the nature in a lyrical attitude, but he is not glorifying nature. His photographs are like a weed growing wild everywhere in Korea, they are not like a precious plant with only a sophisticated Latin botanical name.
Unlike previous work he has shown, Chung Shik Han is presenting photographs inclined towards a documentary character. By giving a name to an unnamed place of no specific character chosen at random, he tries to firmly settle his relationship with that place. In that he is trying to rediscover land we have lost, one might call his photographs topographical. His photographs show such clear details that their resolution does not seem to be reduced even when they are enlarged to more than life size. The extremely simplified space, after everything has been removed that could be a clue to the scale, allows a single square foot of land to feel like a vast expanse. It is the space of purity. It reminds us that the landscape is destined to be cut up and to be deformed.
No photographer in Korea has had any effect on Kyu Tae Hwang. He does not owe his creativity either to the amateurism which was prevalent in the Korean photography of the 1970s or to realism. His works show that the sun and earth, which provide the energy and the space human beings need to lead their life and make their living, burning or being melted. They bring up and image of the crisis caused by the destruction of the ozone layer and of other extraordinary phenomena in the global climate. He does not focus on the world revealed by the sun but on the sun itself. Whatever he shows us, whether the sun or a forest, his photographs are far from performing the fundamental function of photography, recording reality. They just exist in an independent state, cut off from the stable circuit of reality.
When one sees bow his works are strictly limited to the minimal elements, one might imagine that he is a minimalist, but his restrained elements have a very strong, lyrical color. Even though the elements composing his photographs are extremely simplified, they integrate organically with the background. With his superior instincts about color and layout, he gives esthetic and lyrical dimensions to problems of reality.
The collapse of the border between fine art and photography in the modern art genre after 1980 has stimulated both photography and fine art Many museums around the world realize that photography is a true cultural product having real value.
Photographers no longer try to lock themselves into the using photography as a tool record reality and to establish esthetic ideals. Nor do they approach photography as a fine art, because photography is a fine art itself. Photographers accept the fact that its short history is a defect of photography compared with other visual plastic arts, while on the other hand they recognize that fact as s strong point, being blessed with the many possibilities of youth.
Korean photographers today present their views by making free use of an international common tongue. But we know that they are not stateless people for their Korean spirit is evident in their works. Now the problem for them seems to be how to generalize this spirit into the global language.
This exhibition, held in a large-scale museum, has significance not only for the field of photography, suggesting how museums can benefit from photography as a medium of expression in contemporary art, but also as the first full-scale attempt to the photographic talent accumulated in Korea. I believe that this exhibition, which has been made possible by its capable curator, who keeps an expert eye on new artistic trends, will have great influence on museum circles which intend to detach photography from the long-established fine arts.
